DETECTION OF C. DIFFICILE TOXIN B FROM HUMAN FECAL SPECIMENS
The C. DIFFICILE TOXIN/ANTITOXIN KIT uses a tissue culture format to detect the presence of cytotoxic activity (cell rounding) in fresh or frozen human fecal specimens and confirms the identification of C. difficile toxin by using specific antitoxin.
The reagents in the C. DIFFICILE TOXIN/ANTITOXIN KIT include toxin control and specific antitoxin. The kit instructions include separate protocols for using microtiter wells or culture tubes. Results are available after 18 hours.
TECHLAB® C. DIFFICILE TOXIN/ANTITOXIN KIT:
Clostridium difficile infection usually occurs when the normal microflora of the intestinal tract is altered or killed by antibiotics. Once toxigenic C. difficile growth begins, toxins are produced, causing diarrhea and colitis. Toxigenic strains of C. difficile carry the genes encoding the toxins. The disease results from the toxins that the organism produces.
C. difficile produces two main toxins, toxin A and toxin B, toxigenic C. difficile strains may produce both toxins or only toxin B. Toxin A is a weakly cytotoxic enterotoxin while toxin B is strongly cytotoxic and as little as one picogram can be detected by tissue culture assay.
