Detect Giardia, Cryptosporidium and E. histolytica
Techlab™ Tri-Combo Parasite Screen

3m enviro swab flat 373 627 image

The TECHLAB® TRI-COMBO PARASITE SCREEN™  test is an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) for the simultaneous qualitative detection of Giardia spp., Cryptosporidium spp., and/or E. histolytica antigen in human fecal specimens. The test uses monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to cell-surface antigens of Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and E. histolytica.

The test is an ideal screening test for the three most common parasitic causes of diarrhea: giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis or amebiasis. The TRI-COMBO PARASITE SCREEN test serves as a screen to rule out negative specimens and reduce the number of specimens that require additional follow-up testing.

  • Results in approximately 2 hours
  • Does not cross react with non-pathogenic E. dispar
  • Single test for Giardia, Cryptosporidium  and E. histolytica
  • Performance Characteristics (compared to cultural/zymodeme analysis)
    • Sensitivity 92.9%
    • Specificity 98.1%
  • Limit of Detection (LOD) per ml of feces
    • 8450 cysts/mL for Giardia
    • 47,962 cysts/mL for Cryptosporidium
    • 1,676 PZs/mL for E. histolytica

Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and E. histolytica are the three most common parasitic causes of diarrheal disease. The most common method used to detect giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis and amebiasis has been diagnosis by ova and parasite (O&P) light microscopy.

However, accuracy of O&P results depends upon the skill of the technician and also relies on the presence of intact cysts in the feces, which may not be present in all samples. The ELISA procedure is straightforward to perform and exhibits increased sensitivity compared to microscopic examination.

Giardia lamblia is a zoonotic protozoa with a resistant cyst stage that can survive in soil and water and when ingested infection typically results in chronic debilitating diarrhea, weight loss and malabsorption.

Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite common in wild and domesticated animals with a oocyct that is resistant to disinfection commonly used for water supplies. Direct or water borne transmission result in diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. In immunocompromised patients this infection can be life threatening.

E. histolytica is an intestinal parasite that infects approximately a half billion persons worldwide annually. Patients infected with pathogenic E. histolytica may show a wide range of conditions. Some may be asymptomatic; others may show mild diarrhea that develops into bloody diarrhea and eventually fulminant colitis.  The severe disease of colitis and liver abscesses results in a mortality rate estimated between 40,000 and 120,000 persons a year.
