RAPID DETECTION OF GIARDIA AND CRYPTOSPORIDIUM FROM HUMAN FECAL SPECIMENS
The TECHLAB® GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM QUIK CHEK™ test is a combined rapid membrane enzyme immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Cryptosporidium and Giardia lamblia antigen in human fecal specimens. This test is suitable for fresh or frozen fecal specimens, samples in transport medium (Cary Blair, C&S) or preserved in formalin.
Cryptosporidium and Giardia lamblia are found in a wide range of animal hosts as well as humans and are frequently spread by water and food contamination as well as direct contact with infected individuals.
TECHLAB® GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM QUIK CHEK™
Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and E. histolytica are the three most common parasitic causes of diarrheal disease. The most common method used to detect giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis and amebiasis has been diagnosis by ova and parasite (O&P) light microscopy.
However, accuracy of O&P results depends upon the skill of the technician and also relies on the presence of intact cysts in the feces, which may not be present in all samples. The Quik Chek procedure is straightforward to perform, rapid and sensitive.
Giardia lamblia is a zoonotic protozoa with a resistant cyst stage that can survive in soil and water and when ingested infection typically results in chronic debilitating diarrhea, weight loss and malabsorption.
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite common in wild and domesticated animals with a oocyct that is resistant to disinfection commonly used for water supplies. Direct or water borne transmission result in diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. In immunocompromised patients this infection can be life threatening.
