DETECTION OF CRYPTOSPORIDIUM OOCYST ANTIGEN IN HUMAN FECAL SPECIMENS
The TECHLAB® CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II™ test is an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) for the qualitative detection of Cryptosporidium oocyst antigen in human fecal specimens. This test is suitable for fresh or frozen fecal specimens, or samples in transport medium (Cary Blair, C&S) or preserved in formalin.
TECHLAB® CRYPTOSPORIDIUM II™
Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and E. histolyticaare are the three most common parasitic causes of diarrheal disease. The most common method used to detect giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis and amebiasis has been diagnosis by ova and parasite (O&P) light microscopy.
However, accuracy of O&P results depends upon the skill of the technician and also relies on the presence of intact cysts in the feces, which may not be present in all samples. The ELISA procedure is straightforward to perform and exhibits increased sensitivity compared to microscopic examination.
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite common in wild and domesticated animals with a oocyct that is resistant to disinfection commonly used for water supplies. Direct or water borne transmission result in diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. In immunocompromised patients this infection can be life threatening.
