Pecan, Carya illinoinensis, is a member of the Juglandaceae family and is a species of hickory native to northern Mexico and the southern United States in the region of the Mississippi River. Symptoms of pecan allergy can range from mild to life-threatening and allergy to pecan was the fourth most common of the tree nut allergies reported by Sicherer et al. (2001). Pecans are used throughout the food industry as an ingredient in products such as cakes, biscuits and chocolate. It is therefore important that manufacturers monitor production facilities for cross contamination of this allergen.
